Overview:
Superbly acted, classic melodrama about a black Philadelphia policeman (Poitier) who returns to his Mississippi hometown only to become involved in the investigation of the murder of a prominent white citizen. Steiger is method-actor solid as the small-town sheriff looking for clues and butting heads with Poitier.
Oscar for best picture, screenplay, and actor (Steiger).Based on the novel by John Ball. Poitier starred in two film sequels. Followed by a TV series 20 years later.
