Overview:
Cab driver De Niro has a lot on his mind including fantasies about Shepherd and political assassination. Harshly, gritty underbelly of New York life gets exposed with Keitel as pimp and Foster as his underage prostitute. Brilliant, Oscar-nominated Bernard Herrmann musical score evokes melancholy and menace.
Academy Award nominations included best picture, actor (De Niro), supporting actress (Foster), but did not include director Scorsese. The bloodletting in the violent, film-ending mayhem had to be toned down before the movie could be released. Scorsese changed the bloody deep reds to a murkier brown.
