Overview:
Mitchum plays a psychotic preacher who marries a lonely widow (Winters) with two children in the hopes of finding the loot stolen by her husband. Mitchum gives a chilling performance and there are moments of true terror in this dark tale. Silent screen star Gish plays a matriarch who takes in the children.
This is the only film directed by actor Laughton. Based on a novel by Davis Grubb. Remade as a TV movie in 1991 with Richard Chamberlain.
