Although the violence is at times extreme, the film does a fine job showing both the attraction and grim truth of mob life. Based on Pileggi's novel Wiseguy. Joe Pesci won an Academy Award for his performance and the film also received nominations for Lorraine Bracco, Best Screenplay and Best Picture.
