White Heat, the Movie

White Heat

1949

Director:
Raoul Walsh

Screenplay:
Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts

Cast:
James Cagney, Virginia Mayo, and Edmund O'Brien

Overview:
Gang leader Cody is a certifiable psychopath, and Cagney plays him to the hilt in this red-hot crime drama. Walsh directs as a pause would derail the movie. Cagney’s mother obsession is a superior example of how 1940s moviemakers weren't afraid to give their characters meaningful quirks. Cagney’s film-ending “Top Of The World” line is a classic.
